What Happened After the Ad? Did Customers Come?
The campaign brought visits, phone calls and forms. The report shows interest. But when it is time to decide the next budget, you need another answer: how many of those people became customers?
Measurement continues after the form
On 10 September 2026, Google announced new data connection and measurement capabilities, including Data Manager in Analytics and DV360, enhanced conversions and Meridian upgrades. The direction is to connect advertising activity with more complete business information.
For a small business, the starting point can be simpler: one shared record of enquiries and their progress. Before introducing more complex technology, know who owns each contact and what happens next.
Record each enquiry’s journey
Record the date, source where reliably identifiable, service of interest, owner and status. For example: new enquiry, contacted, quotation sent, pending, sale or did not proceed.
Add a next-action date. Without ownership and follow-up, an enquiry can disappear among emails and messages. Record the reason for a lost opportunity when known; avoid treating assumptions as facts.
A hypothetical example
Suppose a campaign cost €300 and generated 30 enquiries. Cost per enquiry is €10. If three became new customers, advertising cost per new customer is €100. These are illustrative figures, not results from an actual campaign.
Assess the investment alongside sales value, fulfilment costs and the possibility of repeat business. Advertising spend is only part of customer acquisition cost. A sale may also have been influenced by multiple channels beyond the final click.
Outcomes reveal where to improve
If enquiries are irrelevant, review the message, audience and form. If they are relevant but remain unanswered, review the response process. If quotations go out without progress, review follow-up and customers’ objections.
For services with longer decision cycles, allow time for enquiries to mature. Compare contacts from the same period and keep measurement definitions consistent.
Connect tools when the foundation is reliable
Where appropriate, a CRM and importing sales outcomes into advertising platforms can help. Implementation needs sound data handling, consent where required and a clear business purpose. Technical connections are useful when the records themselves are reliable.
At Promoters, we review the campaign alongside the handling of the contacts it generates. If you want your next report to answer “did customers come?” too, let us help organise that journey.
