Google Answers Without a Click: How AI Overviews and AI Mode Are Changing SEO

Dionisios Iliopoulos31 August 2026

Search No Longer Works the Way It Used To

For years, the logic of SEO was relatively simple: a user performed a search, Google displayed a list of results, and a business aimed to rank as high as possible in order to earn the click.

In 2026, that journey is changing.

AI Overviews and AI Mode allow Google to generate answers directly within the search results page, drawing information from multiple sources. For many queries, users can now get a significant part of the answer without having to visit a website.

That does not mean that “SEO is dead.”

It means we need to reconsider what success in organic search actually looks like.

What the Data Shows About Clicks

The shift in user behaviour is already measurable.

Research by the Pew Research Center based on real search behaviour found that when Google displayed an AI-generated summary, users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits.

When no AI summary was shown, that rate was almost twice as high: 15%.

Even more strikingly, users clicked one of the sources cited within the AI summary in only 1% of visits.

At the same time, Google announced in June 2026 that AI Overviews had surpassed 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode had exceeded 1 billion.

However, the picture is not entirely one-sided. Google maintains that the overall volume of organic clicks to websites remains relatively stable and that clicks generated through AI-powered search experiences may, in some cases, be higher quality.

So the right conclusion is not:

“SEO no longer drives traffic.”

It is:

“Rankings and click volume are no longer enough as the only measures of success.”

Do AI Overviews Require a Different Kind of SEO?

There is a great deal of misinformation around this topic.

Google itself makes it clear that there is no special technical requirement for a page to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

There is no specific “AI schema,” special markup, or hidden GEO setting that guarantees visibility.

For a page to be used as a supporting source, it must first be properly indexable and eligible to appear in standard Google Search.

The fundamentals remain the same:

  • proper crawling and indexing,
  • important content available as text,
  • clear internal linking,
  • a strong experience on both mobile and desktop,
  • structured data that accurately reflects the visible content,
  • an up-to-date Google Business Profile,
  • high-quality images and video where relevant.

In other words, GEO does not replace SEO.

It extends it into an environment where search engines do not simply display links — they also generate answers.

What Type of Content Is Becoming More Valuable?

This is perhaps where the biggest shift is happening.

A generic article that repeats information already available across hundreds of other websites is easy to summarise.

By contrast, content is much harder to replace when it includes:

  • real projects,
  • personal or professional experience,
  • case studies,
  • original data,
  • specific comparisons,
  • original photography and video,
  • questions that come from real customers.

In its official guidance for generative AI Search, Google places particular emphasis on unique, valuable and non-commodity content.

For a small business, this can actually be a positive development.

There is no need to publish 100 generic articles every year.

A business can create less content, while making each piece far more useful, specific and relevant.

Information Structure Matters More Than Ever

An article should answer the question that brought the user to the page as quickly as possible.

A good structure is:

  1. a clear title,
  2. a direct answer near the beginning,
  3. sections that address specific sub-questions,
  4. data or real-world examples,
  5. a clear next step.

This is not an “AI hack.”

It is simply better communication.

Visitors can quickly understand whether they are on the right page, while both Google and AI systems can more easily understand the thematic structure of the content.

From “How Many Clicks Did We Get?” to “What Were Those Clicks Worth?”

As Search changes, the way we interpret performance metrics needs to change as well.

It is no longer enough to look only at:

  • impressions,
  • rankings,
  • clicks.

We also need to understand:

  • how many visitors actually engage,
  • which pages generate genuine interest,
  • how many people call,
  • how many complete a form,
  • how many leads are generated,
  • how many sales or bookings result.

Since June 2026, Google has also been testing dedicated Search Console reporting for visibility within generative AI features.

What Should a Business Do Now?

There is no need to panic or abandon SEO.

What businesses need is a stronger foundation:

A properly built website.
Clear service pages.
Real experience and useful information.
An optimised Google Business Profile.
Original content.
Accurate measurement.

Search is changing.

The objective, however, remains the same:

to help the right person find, understand and trust your business.
